BENEFITING: PEOPLES MUSIC SCHOOL INC
EVENT DATE: Feb 01, 2014
If you're a girl in her 20's or even 30’s, chances are you grew up loving a group of guys named Brian, AJ, Kevin, Nick, and Howie, better known as The Backstreet Boys. This is where our adventure begins…
Imagine one night you're getting a coffee at a Dunkin Donuts on a typical freezing-cold Chicago night and you turn around to see AJ McLean and Brian Litrell waiting to order, right behind you.
Well that's exactly what happened to us on the night of their Christmas performance at The Chicago Theatre. Instead of going completely starstruck, Julie kindly offered to pick up the tab for the boys' drinks and breakfast sandwiches. While this was happening, I was stuck outside trying to convince a security guard to get back inside to get my hot chocolate. Right before the boys had walked into the Dunkin Donuts, I had gone back outside to see what the commotion by their tour bus was, as the coffee chain was right in front of the buses. While I was trying to convince the security guy that I would keep calm and wouldn't go tackle AJ or Brian, I noticed Brian slipping something into Julie's purse while she was turned around.
After I had finally gained entry into Dunkin Donuts, Julie and I, along with our other friends, had a few more minutes to chat and snap a picture with the boys. When they finally had their order set, Brian told Julie to look in her purse and remember to pay it forward. We were both confused for a second, and then I excitedly remembered what I had seen him do while I was stuck outside! She opened her purse to find $10.
For some of you, $10 might not seem like a lot, but this $10 came with a lot more than just monetary value. Not only did this money come from The Backstreet Boys, but it came with the message to "do good" and spread the love. So instead of keeping this money for sentimental value or even donating the $10 to any random charity, we want to do something that will truly pay it forward. We want to use this money to kickstart a movement, using the first ten bucks from Brian and AJ as a gift to the school to encourage you all to donate as well. We will have a fundraising campaign going from now until January 31st. 100% of proceeds will go to The Peoples Music School, which is a completely free music school for children in Chicago that offers music lessons and instruments to these students free of charge. Many inner city schools lack the resources needed for the arts, such as music education. Music education turns students from the streets to music and channels their inner passion, without the funding students are not able to purse their talents. Read more about them at peoplesmusicschool.org.
Think about it, what if AJ, Brian, Howie, Kevin and Nick never had the opportunity to pursue music due to lack of funding? We would be a Backstreet Boy-less world and we wouldn’t want that. We are asking you to please donate in any way possible to make the holidays for these students a little more cheerful this year. If this campaign goes well, Julie and I hope to create an entire fundraising organization called Bucks From Backstreet. If we can get support from you and really kick off this organization, this will be the first of many ways that we hope to raise money and pay it forward for the sake of music education. Donate for the community, and donate for your inner BSB fan. Please spread the word to everyone and anyone, so that we can continue to spread the joy of music. $2,000 provides a full year of music education for one child, so let's see if we can get one more student into The People's Music School!
