BENEFITING: BOX ELDER COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT FOUNDATION
Savana Marble and Allee Schulze are 5th Graders at Garland Elementary School. They joined student council because they wanted to make a difference with the students at the school. After reading an article about a girl who raised funds to install a Buddy Bench to help her brother who struggled to make friends they were inspired to do the same for their school. They are raising funds to install 8 benches at Elementary Schools in Box Elder County School District.
The Buddy Bench is a bench on the playground where a student can sit if they are feeling lonely, would like to meet new friends, or would like to play with someone other than their regular peer group. Students and faculty are instructed to watch for people who sit on the bench and look for ways to include them or get them involved. The Buddy Bench can help students who have a hard time communicating their feelings to reach out, and it gives other students an opportunity to expand their circle of friends and practice compassion for others. This will also help to decrease bullying in the schools.
Originally the project entailed raising funds for 2 benches at Garland Elementary, but after visiting the Kiwanis Club and receiving a commitment from them for $200 for each bench installed in a school (up to 7 schools), Savana and Allee decided the increase the scope of their project. Each bench costs $800 and they are trying to raise funds to install at total of 8 benches; 2 benches at Garland Elementary, and 1 bench each at Fielding, Grouse Creek, McKinley, North Park, Park Valley, & Snowville. They currently have donations from Shopko, P&G, Nucor Steel, Lions Club, Bear River Valley Hospital, and Kiwanis Club totaling $3600. If they raise more funds than required for the 8 benches they will install benches at other Elementary Schools in Box Elder County. Once the benches are installed Savana and Allee will help with Assemblies at each school explaining the bench and how to use it to help their own student body.
Any business or individual that donates at least $200 will be recognized on a plaque installed at the school with the bench. Donations can also be made to the Box Elder School District Foundation in order to receive tax write offs. For more information you can contact Savana Marble at her dad's cell number 435-230-0180.
