BENEFITING: Pits For Patriots Inc
Registered Therapy Dog Buford in need of surgery number 6. Won’t you please help us get him back on his feet so he can get back to his kids?
Pits for Patriots rescued Buford from a local animal care and control facility after being found as a stray. His family was notified, but sadly they never came to reclaim this wonderful dog. Buford spent five months waiting for rescue, all the while doing therapy work at the senior citizen’s home across from the shelter. Buford became more and more depressed at the shelter and they contacted Pits for Patriots, suggesting that he would be the perfect candidate for our therapy dog program.
Unfortunately, upon taking Buford in to our program, it became clear to us that he was suffering from some sort of leg injury. We immediately took him to our vet where he was diagnosed with an old pelvic fracture and torn CCL, requiring surgery.
Joe a local firefighter, met Buford at a volunteer meeting, and it was love at first sight. In May of 2015, the pairing was made official. Unfortunately, Buford was not in his new home at the firehouse long before it became evident that he was once again struggling to walk. X-Rays showed Buford was in need of a femoral osteotomy, a very serious and painful surgery. This was devastating news to both Joe and us, as Buford had just undergone two knee surgeries the past year, and we were hoping his painful past was behind him. Our vet performed the surgery and “Buf” was back on the road to recovery, or so we thought. Several weeks into his rehabilitation the limp came back, and another trip to the vet revealed that the scar tissue that developed post-operatively, was now rubbing on the femoral cup causing immense pain and requiring yet another surgical procedure.
Buford has been undergoing by DNSUnlocker"> physical therapy since February of this year which has brought his right leg back to almost normal following his surgeries. He was doing so well that he was able to pass his pet therapy certification back in April and has been part of the Paws for Strength program through the Brian & Amanda Bickell Foundation. Joe and Buford spend their Sundays with the kids of Hephzibah Home, which is a home for children traumatized by abuse and neglect. To say that Buford was born to do this kind of work is an understatement. He loves going to see his kids and being one of the ambassador’s for Pits for Patriots.
Unfortunately, last week the limping came back only this time it is Buford’s left leg. He has seen the vet and has been diagnosed with a CCL tear requiring surgery and further post-operative therapy. We have spent $2700 on his PT this year, this latest surgical intervention will be approximately $3000 and he will require at the very least another six months of PT post-op, costing another $2700.
This pup, like the kids he serves, has been through more than one should have to endure, but with your help Buford will once again rise from the ashes. Please help us get this wonderful boy back to his kids.
