Ayi Mensah school is located in a village about an hour away from Accra, Ghana, serving students from preschool age through middle school. My husband and I are from California and Utah and have worked in Accra for the last 3 years. I spend one day each week providing a volunteer reading program which I run somewhat like a mobile library. Each week we have story time in each class, followed by reading time, which allows the children to spend time reading and looking at the books I bring to the village each week. I visit each classroom allowing all 105 of the children in the school time with the books.
The school is in desperate need of a small structure to use as a library. I continually bring used children's books with me from the U.S. to Ghana, but there is nowhere to keep them at the school so I store them at my home and transport them to the school each week. If we could keep the books at the school the children would have access to them all week, rather than one day each week.
Please help us build a basic, one-room library and purchase a few simple bookcases, tables and chairs to furnish it. Thank you for your consideration.
