The Poultry Project helps HIV/AIDS orphans in Uganda start their own smallholder poultry businesses. In its fifth year, the Project has been very successful in bringing the sustainable benefits of commerce (including the ability to pay for food, medical care and education) to more than 25 impoverished Ugandan families.
Based on the results of a Spring 2010 Project Evaluation, it was clear that Project participants were struggling with how best to house their chickens. Historically, the Project’s approach to chicken housing was to provide each new participant with suggested tips on how to build chicken coops out of materials commonly found in rural Ugandan villages. When surveyed, however, several participants indicated that they had never built a coop or that they built a coop which did not hold up. As a result, these participants either allowed their chickens to roam the land freely or, worse yet, to live in their homes. This caused numerous issues for the businesses and health of these participants.
To raise awareness about the Project and the specific issue it was facing, the Project held its first annual Chicken Coop Design Competition in the fall of 2010. We asked farmers, designers, thinkers, architects and artists to design chicken coops for use in urban or suburban backyards. While the competition guidelines were geared more toward urban farming, we planned to use attributes from the winning entries in the design of a coop which would be distributed to our Ugandan participants. The competition was a huge success, with more than 60 entries from all over the globe! The winner was announced at an event in Cleveland in November 2010. Perhaps the Project’s most valuable takeaway from the Chicken Coop Design Competition was the engagement of Emily Axtman, a very talented architect working in the nonprofit sector (AmeriCorps and DesignCorps). Ms. Axtman submitted one of the leading coop designs and has since agreed to travel with the team to Uganda to work with participants to design and build a model chicken coop.
After the model coop is constructed, materials will be purchased and distributed to Poultry Projects participants so they can build their own functional, sustainable, eco-friendly coops. Moving forward, each family supported by the Poultry Project will receive materials to build a chicken coop.
We need $5,000 to pay for:
Travel expenses for Emily Axtman ($1500 airfare, $500 room and board, $50 in-country transportation, $300 innoculations, $30 visa) - $2,380
Design / Build Workshop - ($200 transportation vouchers for 50+ participants to attend the 2-day workshop, $200 food for participants, $75 paper/pens/flip charts, $200 materials for coop design modules/demonstrations/model, $100 fee for poultry farming expert)- $825
Chicken Coop Materials - (the coop design and materials will be decided at the design/build workshop; we estimate that materials for each coop will cost $50-70; we plan to give coops to most of the current 27 participants and to the 15 families we plan to add - we plan to purchase materials for at least 35 coops) - $1750-2,000
