THE STORY:

Yusef Shakur wrote -

For the last year and a half, we have been knee-deep in raising funds to transform an abandoned home into a community center in the Detroit neighborhood Z8ne (Zone 8, 48208). During that time period we have generated over $6,000, which has been used towards property taxes, demolition, windows, doors, labor and materials. Presently, we have a goal of $50,000  to finish the community center renovations!!

We have raised $7,000.00 off line and have received a matching commitment of $25,000 towards raising the $50,000. So every dollar donated is matched 100%!  We are humbly asking for your support by donating whatever you can.

All money raised will go towards:Past due taxes * New roof *Exhaust system *Finished Basement *Deck & stage *Building supplies *Plumbing and electrical * Labor and Community programming

Restoring the Neighbor Back to the ‘Hood’s “Resisting Gentrification Campaign” is led by neighborhood organizer Yusef Bunchy Shakur. For 15 days in February Shakur will live, as long as conditions allow, in the formerly abandoned home without gas, water, or electricity to raise awareness of the issues permeating Detroit and the Z8ne Neighborhood. This act will launch the yearlong campaign of #ResistingGentrification by galvanizing, developing and #SupportIndigenousLeadership.

Shakur utilizes his myriad of life experiences --- being raised in extreme poverty, alcoholism and abuse in the home, abandoned by his father, co-founding a gang and ultimately finding himself in prison where he met his father for the first time --- to heal and restore humanity to his Detroit neighborhood Z8ne.

By setting up his “new” home for 15 days, Shakur is raising awareness to the issues of homelessness, unemployment, neighborhood decay, and abandonment and creating a new vision for Z8ne. “I spent much of my early years hurting people by growing up in a hurt  neighborhood. The last 15 years I’ve worked to transform others by building opportunities for redemption and hope. Hurt people hurt people – healed people heal people,” said Shakur.

Your support can help bridge the gap between hope and desperation for a neighborhood under siege. Contact Yusef Bunchy Shakur at 313-459-6008 or check out the Facebook Event.
