It is estimated that at least 30 million Americans currently suffer from an eating disorder and yet only 1 in 10 of those afflicted with these life-threatening diseases receive treatment. For most, the inability to obtain much needed and appropriate care is a matter of economics. The fact is that eating disorder treatment can be prohibitively expensive, sometimes exceeding $1,000/day, and most insurance policies fall woefully short in providing the coverage necessary to successfully recover from these illnesses. That's where the Kirsten Haglund Foundation steps in, offering “scholarships” to help offset the cost of treatment. Under the watchful eye of its creator, Kirsten Haglund (Miss America 2008), whose personal struggles with eating disorders not only were the cornerstone of her Miss America platform, but have since become a catalyst for her tireless work as an outspoken national advocate for eating disorder sufferers and eating disorder awareness, the KHF works diligently to identify and provide assistance to those committed to doing to the hard work necessary to recover. The purpose of this fundraiser is to support Kirsten's efforts by raising money to fund those scholarships. My goal? To mobilize a "social media flash mob" of 100,000, each contributing $3.50 (the cost of a "virtual brick" in our metaphorical Foundation of Hope). What can you expect in the way of a return on your investment? The satisfaction that derives from witnessing the power all of us have to make a difference in the lives of others with the smallest of efforts; the confidence that comes from knowing that virtually every one of the 350 pennies you donate will be used to fund a scholarship aimed at helping to offset the cost of medical care for a deserving recipient; and the gratitude that will eternally reside in the hearts of those who, in turn, will be afforded the opportunity to benefit from treatment they otherwise could not afford – and the hope for a healthier tomorrow that comes with it. Let's do this!!!
