THE STORY:

BUILDING BRIDGES WORLDWIDE wrote -

I have decided to run the NYC Marathon with Building Bridges Worldwide, a not-for-profit organization committed to constructing schools, orphanages, clean water wells, medical clinics, and bridges in impoverished communities both domestically and around the world.  In 2013, Building Bridges is funding and working on projects in Ghana, Niger and New Orleans.  Please see below for more information about these important projects.  The organization is operated solely by its founders, so there is little operation overhead and your donations will go directly to the projects.

Ghana

Building Bridges Worldwide has partnered with Azumah Nelson Foundation to construct a six room school house with a library and technology center in the rural village of Anum Appam in Ghana.  The current school building is structurally unsound and is not a safe for the children.  The new school will provide an improved environment for learning and the new technology center will provide students the opportunity to leverage modern technolgy and learning tools to supplement the standard curriculum.

Volunteers will be traveling to Ghana with Building Bridges during the week of August 9th to 18th to work on the project side by side with the local people.

New Orleans

Building Bridges has partnered with St. Bernard’s Project to construct a home for a family in St. Bernard’s Parish, LA.  New Orleans has been battered by natural and man made disasters over the past few years and its community continues to struggle to rebuild and renew their way of life.  Volunteers will travel to New Orleans during the weekend of October 10th - 13th and will work hand in hand with community members to help with the construction of the new home.

Nearly 80% of housing units in St. Bernard’s Parish had severe damage from Katrina’s storm surge and levee breaches. Since then, St. Bernard’s Parish has experienced the most dramatic population decline in the state of Louisiana due to residents either choosing not to return home or not being able to return home.  We will be working with St. Bernard’s Project to fund the cost of rebuilding a new house for a family in need. Through our fundraising and volunteer work, we will help a family to return home.

Niger

Building Bridges has partnered with Educate Tomorrow to construct a three room schoolhouse in Kirtachi, Niger.  Kirtachi is located in the southwest of Niger near the border with Benin.  Our partner has extensive experience working in Niger and has already constructed one school in the village.  Building Bridges is still evaluating whether it will be possible to bring volunteers to Niger this fall to help with the construction of this project.  As a result of the conflict in Mali, there are currently safety concerns with respect to travel in and around Niger.

Building Bridges has always focused on helping those who need it the most.  Based on the 2012 CIA World Factbook, Niger has a GDP per capita of $400, making it the eighth poorest country in the world (185 of 192).  Despite the extreme levels of poverty in Niger, it does not receive nearly enough foreign aid.

In connection with the Kirtachi Project, we are working on setting up our first technology center.  Please click here for more information on that initiative.
