I have decided to run the NYC Half Marathon with Building Bridges Worldwide, a not-for-profit organization committed to constructing schools, orphanages, clean water wells, medical clinics, and bridges in impoverished communities both domestically and around the world. Please see our website for more information about our past projects. In 2014, Building Bridges is planning to fund and complete projects in Niger and Tanzania. Please see below for more information about these important projects. The organization is operated solely by its founders, so there is little operation overhead and your donations will go directly to the projects.
Building Bridges has partnered with BeSomeOne NYC to construct a school in a small village in Tanzania. A group of volunteers will travel to Tanzania to work on the project next August.
Building Bridges has partnered with Educate Tomorrow to construct a three room schoolhouse in Kirtachi, Niger. Kirtachi is located in the southwest of Niger near the border with Benin. Our partner has extensive experience working in Niger and has already constructed one school in the village. Building Bridges is still evaluating whether it will be possible to bring volunteers to Niger next fall to help with the construction of this project. As a result of the conflict in Mali, there are currently safety concerns with respect to travel in and around Niger.
Building Bridges has always focused on helping those who need it the most. Based on the 2012 CIA World Factbook, Niger has a GDP per capita of $400, making it the eighth poorest country in the world (185 of 192). Despite the extreme levels of poverty in Niger, it does not receive nearly enough foreign aid.
In connection with the Kirtachi Project, we are working on setting up our first technology center. Please click here for more information on that initiative.
