Building Families celebrates families and impacts communities with services that bring hope and healing. Our commitment is to keep kids in families and out of institutional settings because we believe that is where they thrive.
We operate two programs of service: Children of Special and Exceptional Need (CHOSEN) addresses adverse childhood concerns such as mental health, trauma, homelessness, out of home placement, etc. Biological and foster/adoptive parents receive professional staff support and instruction to provide care that helps children manage and ultimately overcome trauma. Professional counselors deliver these services via Treatment Foster Care, Transitional Housing, and Comprehensive Family Services.
Good Samaritan Network (GSN) mobilizes a group of compassionate volunteers who build networks that create long-lasting results for families. Professional outreach staff support a growing number of volunteers involved in Family Mentoring and Child Hosting using the Safe Families for Children model; and Team Mentoring, using the Open Table model. The outreach staff also provides assistance through a Pastor’s Helpline and Material Assistance.
In addition to delivering the services above, we are creating innovative programs in response to sweeping changes in the Maryland child welfare system. Comprehensive Family Services (CFS) is a new program that seeks to give much-needed support/services to families who have their children returned home from foster care and are at risk for re-entry into foster care.
We are also involved in a collaborative initiative called Community of Hope that strives to: Mobilize and engage the community in creating a safe environment for kids and youth, help the Patterson Park community become a place where families thrive, and support innovative programs that prevent abuse of children.
Decreased funding across the board, both private and public, has caused a significant shortfall. We remain focused on effective and efficient service delivery. However, to build sustainable funding and human resources, the support of many is needed!
