BioBuilder Educational Foundation (TBEF)'s Fundraiser:

#Builditforward: thank an inspirational teacher

BioBuilder Educational Foundation (TBEF)'s Photo

THE STORY:

Take just thirty seconds right now to think about that special teacher who made a real difference in your life. Maybe it's a teacher who taught a class that got you excited about a topic you now love. Maybe that teacher believed in you more than others did -- and more than you believed in yourself. Or maybe you remember this teacher's class as fun and funny and the best part of school. We all have teachers who made a special impact on us and our #builditforward campaign is a chance for you to say "thank you" in a tangible way. #builditforward will impact that teacher who made such a difference in your life, and it will benefit all those students who are lucky enough to have that teacher now.

BioBuilder is a one-of-a-kind curriculum in the field of synthetic biology, bringing a new model of STEM education to high schools and colleges throughout the US and around the world. What's synthetic biology? Think about how computers have changed our world in the last 20 years. Now imagine what we could do with a coding language that worked in living cells. BioBuilder uses real-world engineering challenges to teach life science, using DNA to reprogram living cells and building living systems from the ground up. Renewable fuels, better medicines, a healthier planet -- all are persistent challenges that are being tackled through synthetic biology. And now you have the opportunity to bring these ideas to your favorite teacher AND support BioBuilder's mission to empower individuals with the tools of synthetic biology.

This summer, the BioBuilder book was published by O'Reilly Media. Early reviewers call the book "accessible" "empowering" and a "must read." With your pledge of $45 or more, a signed copy of the book will be sent to a teacher of your choice, with a note from the authors, recognizing your generosity and gratitude. Sometimes we only realize much later in life how important a single person or event was in our own trajectory. By gifting this book, you have the chance to express your appreciation and possibly open a new, rewarding chapter in the life of your favorite teacher and that teacher's students.

Jeff Baier was one of the few teachers who believed in me, and he met my enthusiasm only with encouragement, instead of derision. He was such a genuine person- each student was only off for the better for each moment spent in his classroom. Be it talking about ferns, spermatophytes, or whatever else. Were it not for him, I would perhaps be left apathetic & regressed, instead of intrigued by (originally ubiquitin) the systems of the biological universe, and pushing forwards to better understand it. 1 year ago
