HFHOC Guiding Principles:
The board and staff of Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County believe that every low-income, working family that resides in Oakland County should have access to safe, decent, affordable housing.
1. Demonstrate the love and teachings of Jesus Christ
2. Advocate on behalf of those in need of decent shelter
3. Focus on shelter by building and renovating simple, decent, affordable houses
4. Engage the broader community through inclusive leadership and diverse partnerships
5. Promote dignity through full partnerships with Habitat homeowners and future home partners
6. Promote transformational and sustainable community development
Since 1995, we have served approximately 160 families through building and rehabilitating homes in nearly a dozen communities across
Oakland County. As our first homeowner Doreen Marquis said, becoming a Habitat homeowner changed the trajectory of her family forever. She was able to send all three of her children to college and secure a brighter future for each of them.
The success of Doreen’s family and others like it demonstrates the impact homeownership has on individuals. We also know that homeownership has an impact on communities as well. In recent years, Habitat Oakland has focused on rehabilitating foreclosed properties. Turning abandoned houses, such as the recently renovated home located next to a playground in Southfield, into a home for a family makes the neighborhood safer for every family and every child.
