Boston students face daunting challenges from violence, poverty and struggling schools. Despite recent drops in violent crime in Boston, Massachusetts still ranks first in the region in violent crime. More than a quarter of Boston’s families with children live in poverty, and nearly one-third of Boston students fail to graduate high school in four years.
Since 2011, Boston Public High School students have been constructing schools in developing countries with buildOn. Through this effort, volunteers galvanized enough local support to sustain full-scale service learning programs in Boston, located at the Community Academy of Science and Health and the Jeremiah E. Burke High School, both located in Dorchester.
Our goal is to engage 300 students each week and also send a group of 12 from each program to consturct a primary school abroad in the summer of 2017. Every dollar raised through the Marathon campaign directly supports our programs in Dorchester.
