What is the cause?:
Our fundraising project was started in order to raise awareness for and fight the spread of Ebola, a highly infectious and often times fatal disease. As of September, the current outbreak of this epidemic has infected more than 6,000 people in West Africa and has resulted in nearly 3,000 fatalities. This makes this outbreak the largest Ebola outbreak on record, with rates of infection expected to rise exponentially in the coming months. There is currently no cure for Ebola; however, medical care and support can increase chances of survival and preventative measures are essential to reduce the spread of the disease. Bulls Against Ebola is trying to help combat the spread of the disease by collecting donations that will directly benefit those affected by Ebola and the workers treating the disease. You can visit the US Center for Disease Control or the World Health Organization for more information on Ebola outbreaks, past and present. Who are Bulls Against Ebola?:
Bulls Against Ebola was born out of several freshman philosophy classes in the Honors College at USF. In our classes we ask questions like - How is knowledge spread in a community? What is human nature and what makes us care for or help others? When confronted with the current Ebola outbreak, and the grave need for both more information and more helping - we decided to essentially put our actions where our words are and attempt to make a difference.
The classes where this project originated have a total of 70 enrolled students. We did the math - and to provide protective gear for that many people would cost in the neighborhood of $7,500. This became our goal - to raise enough money to help protect 70 people, 70 individuals just like us, who are at risk for contracting Ebola. This may be a very small number in comparison to the thousands of people being affected by the Ebola outbreak, but we hope it is just a start and that Bulls Against Ebola can join with other people, communities, countries, and governments to make a difference.
How your donations will help:
Proceeds from the Bulls Against Ebola campaign will benefit Direct Relief's Ebola relief efforts. Direct Relief assures that 100% of donations earmarked for Ebola relief will be used for relief efforts, not for future fundraising. See their statement regarding donations for more information. Direct Relief has sent eleven shipments valued at over 6.8$ million dollars so far! Shipments include items like face masks, rubber boots, isolation gowns, IV saline, and other critical supplies to help stop the spread of Ebola. See their blog for updates on their Ebola relief efforts and future shipments.
