Cat Shugrue dos Santos
The time is nigh. BuncheC@ is TURNING 100 and we want YOU to celebrate our birthdays with us! In lieu of gifts, we are raising money for the New York City Anti-Violence project, where Cat works. AVP empowers lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-affected communities and allies to end all forms of violence through organizing and education, and supports survivors through counseling, legal services, and advocacy. So please donate! A little BuncheCat theirstory: Back in 1980, a very young Steve Bunche and Cat Shugrue met at the infamous Staples High School, and basically, saved each other’s bacon, namely providing invaluable support, back-up, and unconditional love, under some very trying times, that has helped us survive until this day. Starting in 1991, we began to con-celebrate our birthdays, having been born 3 days apart in 1965, dead center of the ‘60s, in Chicago and Quonset Point, RI, respectively. The first BuncheCat Bday BBQ Love Sensation was held on the roof of Cat’s apartment in Hell’s Kitchen, but after that, we moved to Riverside Park, then Prospect Park, and finally, to Cat & Rich’s backyard, where it remains today. It's a great place to meet people--love affairs, lifelong friendships, business ventures, and even marriages have begun at our humble gathering, so you never know. So please come join us, bring friends, family, kids, and (with prior approval from Cat) pets, and a little something to throw on the grill &/or a side &/or a dessert &/or your beverage of choice. We will have burgers, dogs, a beer/soda/water starter cooler, Bunche’s amazing BBQ, and some of Rich's Brasilian beef. RSVP’s are great, as they can help us plan, but we love last minute surprises too. We start around 1 PM and go until at least 8 (some years go into the wee hours of the next day) so if you are a later arrival, just check in to make sure the jukejoint is still jumpin’. We’ll watch the weather reports and keep you updated, as needed, as the date gets closer. We have a tent, two actually, so a little rain makes no never mind to us but squalls or a hurricane would be something different :) Cheers, y’all!
