BENEFITING: ENGAGE BURKINA INC
About: The Notre Dame Initiative for Global Development Burkina Faso Wells and Impact Evaluation Project provides new wells to the people of Burkina Faso and conducts monitoring and evaluation research to measure the impact that the wells are having in communities. NDIGD, in partnership with local South Bend Indiana churches, Engage Burkina, and Clean Water in Africa is working to assess and select sites for communities in need of wells, build new wells, and design and implement an impact evaluation to help determine outcomes due to the additional wells.
Background: Burkina Faso is located in West Africa and is one of the world's poorest countries. Almost a quarter of their population (over 3.4 million people), lack access to clean water. 20,000 children under the age of five die every year from water-related diseases. The average life expectancy for males in 51 years old and 54 for females. One out of three children will probably die before they ever reach the age of ten. The deaths are mostly due to a lack of fresh water. The women of Burkina Faso often walk several miles to a dirty stream or stagnant pool, just to fill a bowl with water.
Solution: Crowdfund enough money to build numerous wells in Burkina Faso to provide clean drinking water and reduce the growing number of diseases spread by drinking infected water. Each well will provide clean water to 500-1,000 people.
Goal: Originally our goal was to build one well, which costs $2,000 to build in Burkina Faso. Now that we reached and surpassed our goal we have decided to push the goal back to $4,000. Huge thank you to everyone who has donated so far !
