Too many individuals in our country have lost loved ones due to gun violence while our elected officials repeatedly turn a blind eye. In addition to political action, I believe the best way to move towards reducing gun violence is to donate money to an organization with a powerful voice and a proven track record in impacting policy.
I've chosen to raise funds for Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence because they approach gun violence as a public health issue. They strive to cut the number of gun deaths in the U.S. in half by the year 2025 by 1) securing policy changes to apply background checks to all gun sales, 2) eliminating the five percent of "Bad Apple" gun dealers supplying 90 percent of all guns used in crimes, and 3) leading a national dialogue and changing social norms around the dangers of guns in the home, unintentional shootings, and gun-related homicides and suicides.
I'm asking you to donate money towards a 25 ton challenge. Here's how it works:
- In a normal week I work out twice, lifting approximately 10,300 pounds per workout. This makes a weekly total of about 20,600 pounds, or about 10 tons.
- During the week of January 18 - 24, 2016, I will attempt to lift more than twice my usual weekly total, aiming for 50,000 pounds, or 25 tons. I think I can accomplish this safely, although it will be tough, for sure.
- If I fail to reach 50,000 pounds, I will force myself to eat the smallest package I can find of something I find truly vile: Nutter Butter cookies. Just the smell of them makes me nauseous, and as a kindergartner, I once held one in my mouth for over a half hour to keep from having to swallow it.
Please do something to help put a stop to the cycle of gun violence in our country. Your support means so much to me.
