Hello. My name is Lillian. I am the leader of the traditional Burundian dancers in Nakivale settlement. In Burundi, dancing and drumming go together – so we dance as the drummers play. There are many girls in our group who are learning traditional dance. We practice Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
But actually that’s not all we do. We’re a community and we really try to teach our girls how to behave. We’ve brought girls back from prostitution and given them something positive they can be a part of with people who support them.
I have an idea to create a dance studio so that we can dance even when it rains and our dancers will be protected from some injuries. Right now we practice down in the valley, and we’ve had some dancers injured because of thorny brush and uneven ground.
I’m running in the World Refugee Day 5k to build the first dance studio in Nakivale settlement – I hope you’ll join me and support me.
