EVENT: World Refugee Day 5k

EVENT DATE: Jun 20, 2017

THE STORY:

Welcome! I’m Therence. I live in the New Hope neighborhood of Nakivale refugee settlement.

I’m running in the World Refugee Day 5k for Drums. I belong to a group of traditional Burundian drummers. We often perform for the community and we’re working to keep our culture going here in Nakivale. But we also teach drums to the younger generation (our youngest member is 7) and to other nationalities in the camp. It’s important to us to share our culture with Somalis, Congolese and Rwandans in Nakivale. But sometimes our drums get holes or damaged when we teach new people. And there aren't enough drums for the young kids to get as much practice as they need.

We’d like to keep teaching and sharing – but for that we need more drums.

Drums are a big part of my life. I went to school and got married all because of drums.

And on World Refugee Day, I will run in the 5k because of drums. I hope you will join us and help our team keep our culture alive and keep drumming!
