THE STORY:

The World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) began working with the Busia Orphanage, or Busia Compassionate Children's Centre, in 2007. After working for several years to improve the lives of the children by improving their safety at home, increasing the quality of their education, and ensuring they receive proper nutrition, WOCCU is preparing to construct new additions to the children's home that will allow them to accomodate the growing number of children in need while also increasing the children's safety, health, and living conditions.

Considering that 1/3 of the children at Busia Orphanage are HIV positive, and that many lost both of their parents due to the disease, we need to provide these children with the necessary building blocks to have a shot at living happier, healthier, fulfilling lives. The ultimate goal of the funds raised, from the Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions, is to build sustainable new facilities at the orphanage. For example, a new well for clean water, toilets, or a dining hall so that the children don't have to eat on the ground or standing up every day. By providing new buildings, supporting financial literacy initiatives, growing vegetable gardens and building composting sites, the orphanage will be equipped with the tools it needs to become self-sustainable. Be a part of the catalyst for change and help us build for Busia.

*The WorldWide Foundation for Credit Unions is the official fundraising and gift-receiving organization for World Council. The Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions is an accredited charity meeting all 20 standards for charity accountability through the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

MY STORY:

Awhile back, I ran in to a coffee shop after work. I naturally overheard some of the muffled conversations around me. Most were college students studying. I couldn't help but notice that the conversation was almost entirely revolved around complaints about life: grades, paychecks, bosses, and lack of materialistic "goods" like not having the newest Macbook or smartphone. This sort of narrative stuck with me as I continued on my way home, and the unraveling in my head began, as my over-analytical brain usually does. The worst part is that I know I've definitely had those negative-talk conversations with people too, multiple times. To be honest, it makes sense that people aren't constantly thinking about topics like world hunger, or how lucky you are to have, you know, stuff like running water and electricity. It's normal.  People have bills to pay, work to attend, and obligations to finish--also "normal." But these people, my friends, are the lucky ones. They are the blessed ones.

The unraveling of my thoughts kicked in, however, because there seems to be an inconceivable, overwhelming lack of motivation or curiosity to step out of a comfort-driven bubble and actually think, for maybe 5 seconds, how you could make a meaningful impact on people who have a fraction of the fundamental physical needs you have in order to live. Or not even to make a direct impact, but to just learn, for the sake of learning. I find myself asking: Is it because people are just lazy? Does it make people uncomfortable to know how lucky they are? Do they feel that their contribution wouldn't make a difference? I have no idea.

I'll leave you with this: I will not spam you daily begging and pleading for the cause. At the end of the day, (hopefully) you will realize that you are a catalyst for a potential change. I will only request one thing. In some way, shape, or form, today or maybe tomorrow, that you be a little bit more curious of this world. Ever since I've chased my curiosity, my outlook on life is not only healthier, it's authentic.

Pursue your curiosity, lovebugs!

Cheers,
Sarah
