Welcome to the fundraising page established on behalf of our first Ainsley’s Angels of Southeast Texas region.
A message from our Regional Director, Captain Marsha:
On May 30th, 1990, a trampoline accident left me as an incomplete quadriplegic. I was 16-years-old and my life changed forever. Before the accident I was a physical kid, always outside, always going 90 to nothing. My new normal was nothing like my old normal.
I eventually engaged in physical activities after the accident but most were difficult to do and require special days or special assistance. I have limited use of my upper extremities (but I have some); that's the benefit of being an incomplete spinal cord injury. My injury is high up in the neurological chain of command.
My body is injured but my soul and my mind are still those of an athlete. Maybe I didn't get my chance to find out if I could ever be a college athlete or an adult triathlete but something inside of me believes it could have been my path as easily as anyones. Then one day my friend, Amie James, suggested we try a racing chair.
With the help of Ainsley's Angels, a kind, supportive group who helps those who otherwise couldn't participate in athletic endeavors, she attained a racing chair for us to try. Being in that chair took me back to the time when I was that young athlete; the adrenaline, excitement, the thrill of the race and having the wind in your face. Now I just happen to be sitting.
I've since had the opportunity to participate in a run with Amie and the Sea Rim Striders. It took me backwards and yet solidly grounded me in the moment, a moment of joy, all at once. Pure heaven!
I have found a whole new group of friends, fellow ATHLETES, who have welcomed me into their family with open arms (maybe due to the fact that they take turns pushing the racing chair). This ride has just begun and I am looking forward to where it leads me. I am looking forward to "rolling it forward" and giving back a little of what has been so generously given to me.
