Timothy Manyise's Fundraiser:

Buy a Book for an African Child

As a young boy growing up in the rural, most of what I knew of the world was what I could see around me. But each night, I would look at the Moon - it was impossibly far away, yet it held a special attraction because it allowed me to dream beyond my personal life and family, and think about the rest of the world and space. In the more rural areas I lived, a girl is born, married off as early as 15 years old and basically lives life under the control of men. Her dreams are locked up in a dark cage – one of misery and manipulation. Because of limited opportunities fuelled with HIV/AIDS impact, so arranged is the marriage that what she can only think is to be a housewife and have kids ‘for the husband’. When I hear of global agendas talking of increased human development index, reduced poverty and improved access to education by all my mind gets confused – do they know about how the other half live? This has led me to start a public trust –Hands Connect, to empower the girl child, create opportunities for rural women and the marginalised. Currently our projects look to assist a local primary school –Musenyereki Primary school, in one of the remotest and poorest ZAKA District in Masvingo, Zimbabwe. To launch the project requires around $15 000 to buy text books, furniture and school fees for underprivileged young girls. Contact:,
