BENEFITING: LIFENETS FOUNDATION INC
EVENT DATE: Mar 01, 2013
What breaks my heart about malaria is that it takes the lives of so many mothers and children despite it being preventable. Today, half the world's population is at risk for malaria—that's over 3 billion people. Out of the 500 million cases that happen each year (a number that doubled over the past two years), 9 out of 10 cases occur in Sub-Saharan Africa where the Anopheles mosquito is most prominent. 100 million people are clinically ill with the disease at any given time, and around 1.2 million people die each year from malaria. 85% of those cases strike children under the age of 5.
For my 21st birthday instead of presents or alcohol, I ask that people donate a net to a family. Each net is very easy to use and protects for at least 5 years. The nets costs 12 dollars, but covers the costs of education we provide to ensure recipeints use the mosquito nets.
