THE STORY:

As many of you know, on July 29, 2015 my brother-in-law Joe Trustey and my niece Anna Trustey died in a tragic plane accident.  It was the second tragedy in our family in less than 12 months, as my nephew AJ Trustey died on October 13, 2014  from complications related to his epilepsy.  It is still impossible for me to comprehend these events and I think of Joe, Anna and AJ often.

There are 3 occasions in my life when I knew, in that moment, that my life was changing forever. The first two were positive. Marrying my wife Jeannie and when my daughter Ellie was born. But when Joe died I knew I had lost something so incredible and important to me that I would never be the same.  Joe was not just my brother-in-law. He was a friend, a mentor, a coach and one of my biggest supporters. He supported me in life, my career, my family and my running. I am a better person today because of Joe.  By who he was, in so many quiet ways - and in ways that made us all laugh - Joe made me want to be more than I ever dreamed I could be.  Joe pushed me to be better than I believed I could be both in my running and professional careers.  He did this for a lot of us.

Not surprisingly, funding epilepsy research became of paramount  importance to Joe after AJ died.  To that end, Joe established the AJ Trustey Epilepsy Research Fund to support innovative epilepsy research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where AJ received treatment.  Now, the best way I know to stay close to Joe's spirit is to carry the torch of something so important to Joe and to do something Joe always supported - my running.   So, I am raising money for AJ’s fund by running the 2017 Boston Marathon with my wife Jeannie (we met training for the Boston Marathon in 2000).  But because Joe challenged us to Dig Deeper; Try Harder; Fly Higher, I am going to run the course on Saturday, Sunday and officially on Marathon Monday.  3 marathons in 3 days.  One marathon each for AJ, Anna and Joe.

As many of you know, Joe’s generosity was legendary, both with his financial contributions and his time.  The Trustey name can be found as a major donor of countless charitable causes in New England, and the stories of Joe’s anonymous giving (many of which are still unknown) are incredible.  Joe was not a man of small things.   In his spirit, I am committing to raise at least $1,000 a mile ($26,200).  That’s no small feat and I need your help.

We all know Joe loved practical jokes and embarrassing other people.  It was one of his best qualities, even to those on the butt end of his humor.  Were you a target of one of his legendary practical jokes?  To get a heavenly smile out of Joe and provide the ballers among you the incentive to go big, I am committing to run the official Boston Marathon in a purple tutu if I meet my fundraising goal.  Purple is the color of epilepsy awareness and November is epilepsy awareness month.

I challenge you all to bring Joe’s spirit and laughter into our lives on April 17, 2017 by supporting my run below.  Ask yourself, what would Joe do?

Thank you in advance for your donation - any amount makes a difference, and is sincerely appreciated.

With gratitude,

Kevin
