Homelessness and hunger are growing issues in the United States and the world and we believe the solution begins at a local level. As Honors students at Cincinnati State College, we have made it our goal to spread awareness on homelessness and hunger in the community and on college campuses. Our use of CrowdRise represents one aspect of our project: to raise money for Gabriel's Place, an organization whose mission is “To provide a safe, beautiful and spiritually nourishing place for the Avondale neighborhood to gather in mutual respect to learn and interact, and to promote peace in the community.” Gabriel's Place maintains a community garden rooted in education, whole foods, and social interaction; a Learning Kitchen where they host community cooking classes and provide weekly meals free of charge; and a Marketplace that brings access to whole foods to Avondale, a food desert. The importance of food does not lie solely in physical nourishment, but also in its ability to bring people together, to maintain communal ties and promote relationship and a sense of belonging. This is what we strive to return to those who have struggled and continue to struggle.
