THE STORY:

The need for focus on teen relationship abuse is further underscored by its role as a precursor of adult domestic violence. Studies show that young people who are involved in violent dating relationships have a greater acceptance of violence in marriages and nearly 30 percent of battered women married men who had abused them while dating. Nearly 80 percent of girls who have been physically abused in their intimate relationship continue to date their abuser.

Ending the cycle of violence starts with education and awareness. The cornerstone of the Center’s Education and Community Services Department is RAPP. The Center is NYC’s premier provider of teen relationship abuse prevention services, with programs in fifteen NYC public intermediate and high schools. A certified social worker is based at each school and offers workshops to the entire student body, counseling, training for parents and staff and peer leadership activities. This year the Center will deliver the life saving RAPP curriculum to over 30,000 NYC public school kids.

Through these programs, the Center works not only to stop domestic violence in the next generation, but to develop leaders committed to ending violence in the lives of others.

Teen relationship abuse is a widespread problem with lasting physical and emotional consequences. One key to our success in school based programs has been the regular availability of Coordinators. The Coordinators provide crisis counseling, safety planning, advocacy or accompaniment to services or family court, and referrals for necessary services. They provide on-going support services for teens involved in abusive relationships.

Relationship abuse does not occur in a vacuum and only a coordinated community-wide effort can stop it. Reaching out to parents and other adults, the family court and criminal justice systems, community-based organizations, and, of course the students, teachers and staff of the high school is essential.
