It's that time again, the time when I ask all of you to support one of my FAVORITE causes, the Chicago Abortion Fund, while I make a slight fool out of myself in our Bowl-a-Thon! (Seriously, I think my "high score" last year was a 70, or something like that).
As you know, I help support and direct CAF as CoChair of the Board of Directors, and this year, boy, have we got our work cut out for us! Our goal for this BAT is BIG: We're hopping to raise $20K and fund AT LEAST 170 women, with our average grant size of $300. Last year, we only funded 100 women, and this year, so far, we haven't funded any because our hotline is closed. We've worked hard to reopen it, and, this month, it looks like we'll be able to fund five women. I can't tell you how much this means to me, let alone these women.
I know, it doesn't seem like a lot of women, just five, you might be asking? But, for those five women, with a grant from us, they can take charge of their own life, their grants are the key to their empowerment, their personal autonomy. Will you help us fund five more? Ten more?
The Chicago Abortion Fund (CAF) fights to overturn economic barriers to reproductive choice. Through direct service, CAF assists women in paying for safe abortion services. In partnership with the women we serve, CAF engages and mobilizes low-income and poor women to become advocates for expanded reproductive access.
Our funding hotline is a key part of making sure a woman has access to a safe, legal abortion.
When a woman calls our hotline seeking funding, she has been turned away from emergency rooms, other providers, Medicaid won't cover her, and the clock is ticking. Last year, we funded 100 people who needed an abortion.
With $20,000, we can fund at least 170. Our average grant to a woman is $300.
The average cost of an abortion by the time a woman calls us is $3000.
Your investment in reproductive justice can make choice possible for a woman.
Thank you so much for your time, and all the support you give to women.
ps If you want to join in the fun, I still have room on my Bowling team! Let me know!
