For ten years, a civil war ravaged Sierra Leone. Now, the country is struggling to rebuild--and we believe its women hold the key.

The Creative Arts Initiative is a literacy-based arts program for young women in Kabala, Sierra Leone, dedicated to strengthening English language skills through creative writing and boosting self-esteem and self-confidence through songwriting, photography, music, and filmmaking. CAI’s aim is to foster creative thinking and self-empowerment through the arts, and to encourage girls to use their creativity in ways that will uplift their community.

In July 2012, CAI will offer its third two-week workshop at the NarSarah health clinic in Kabala. At the end of the program, fifteen girls will debut the original stories and cross-cultural dances they’ve developed for a community audience, using the opportunity to teach others about who they are and what they would like to become.

By providing a year's academic scholarship to all participants, CAI makes it financially possible for these girls to stay in school, investing in their ability to positively impact their communities and, eventually, their nation.  Increased schooling can also directly foster Sierra Leonean girls' health:  youth who remain in school are less likely to be married as adolescents, reducing the risk of death from early pregnancy. Educated women are also more likely to use their resources towards better nutrition and family planning.

You can help by funding instructor travel! While Creative Arts Initiative is low-cost once we're on the ground, the greatest expenses lie in bringing in the arts professionals who will lead the program. In particular, airfare is a giant portion of our budget. We will also be raising funds for the next round of scholarships.

Feeling short on cash, but want to help?  Small expenses add up quickly. Here are some instructor costs you might feel proud to take off our plate.

  • Lodging in Freetown: $25
  • Lodging in Kabala: $60
  • Trip food/water costs: $90
  • Driver lodging: $35
  • Transportation: $70
  • Ferry cost: $10
  • Visa: $150
  • Administrative costs: $100
  • Accident insurance: $15
