Although three years have gone by since my last fundraising endeavor, not a day goes by that I am not reminded of my brother, Payson, who died in 2001 at the age of 27. Sometimes the reminder is something so simple as a song, a joke, or a setting, and sometimes it is through the eyes of my children, that I am reminded of being a sibling and the deep bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood. Whatever the memory or reminder, it is never of his loss, or of mine, but of his strength, his vivacity, and his life, one that was lived to the fullest, and one that taught me many things. It is through his life that I learned about courage, in the face of adversity, humor, in the face of suffering and gratitude, in the face of hardship. It is through his life that I live in appreciation for my own and my children’s. I am ever thankful for the health of my children. I am thankful for my own good health, allowing me to run, train, endure and compete.
This brings me to the 2013 Boston Marathon! This year I will run for team BMC in support of Boston Medical Center. All of the funds that I raise will go directly to the SPARK Center (formerly Children’s AIDS Project). The SPARK Center offers comprehensive services to children and families living with complicated medical conditions including HIV/AIDS, failure to thrive, neurological complications, and emotional and behavioral challenges related to trauma. A hospital-sponsored pediatric program that provides specialized services in the context of traditional classroom environments, it assists more than 100 urban children annually.
As you may or may not know, my mom and I have raised a significant amount of money for the SPARK Center over the past decade. Money that we have raised provided seed funds for the center to expand in terms of space and services. There is a room dedicated in Payson’s memory. When I visit I witness the devotion of the staff and the needs of the children. I want Payson’s legacy to continue to live in the lives of those who need the same strength, courage, and humor in the face of great hardship. Please help me help them by making a contribution.
