Caitrin's Costa Rica Volunteer Trip
Organized by: Caitrin Kohlmeyer
In my final terms at PSU, while completing my Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, I had the experience of performing community service hours for some of my classes. These experiences turned out to be some of the best I had in college and compelled me to look for a larger service opportunity after graduation, this past June. Through the non-profit organization, New Hope, I am scheduled to volunteer at an orphanage in Puntarenas, Costa Rica for two months, beginning on August 16th. My focus will be taking care of the children: feeding them, playing games with them, teaching English, etc. I have already purchased my plane ticket and am excited to go, however I just discovered multiple expenses which I mistakenly thought were included in the program cost. The main expense is daily travel from my home stay to the orphanage, which will cost roughly $100 a week. Also not covered is transportation to-and-from the airport, another $220. Other than the transportation costs I didn’t consider the cost of vaccinations, which is going to be about $400. I considered canceling the trip, but I am committed. My plane ticket is nonrefundable, and I am passionate about the opportunity to volunteer abroad. When I studied abroad in Australia I had the chance to visit Fiji. The best part of my trip was hands down when I got to visit a village and spend time with the children there. Any support towards my trip would be greatly appreciated.
