I'm running the NYC half marathon and raising money for Central American Legal Assistance! CALA is a non-profit organization representing Central and South American refugees facing deportation. We opened our doors in 1986 to serve the thousands of refugees fleeing brutal civil wars in Guatemala and El Salvador and have been "in business" ever since.
While our direct service model is not always a favorite of large foundations and institutional donors, I'm convinced that this is the best way to provide expert legal representation to people who are in the most vulnerable position of their lives- at risk of being deported to a country where they have experienced severe trauma and where they fear much worse.
My 13.1 mile run is small potatos compared to the nearly 1,500 miles that most of my clients travel in treacherous conditions to get to the U.S. But it feels like the least I can do to raise some money so that once they get here, CALA can provide them with competant and compassionate legal representation to prevent them from being sent back.
