THE STORY:

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, will you help me turn the Golden State Purple? I am proud to serve as the Executive Director of the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence (the Partnership), our state’s recognized domestic violence coalition. Representing over 1,000 advocates, organizations and allied groups throughout the state, our coalition has been instrumental in the passage of over 200 pieces of legislation that increase safety and healing for domestic violence survivors and their families.

For our first ever Purple Purse Campaign, we are promoting the important work we do year-round to advocate for public policies that benefit all Californians. As an example of this critical policy work, we are highlighting one of our most recent legislative victories: AB 418 (Chiu), which enhances the economic security of domestic violence victims by enabling them to terminate their leases early if they need to relocate and find replacement housing due to safety concerns. Signed into law this summer, this bill was a priority for the Partnership because we know that economic security is essential for domestic violence survivors to be able to strengthen family safety and stability. Recent research has documented how economic abuse by an intimate partner impacts a survivor’s confidence in managing financial resources and their ability to achieve long-term safety and security[i].

Public policies like this—which have a direct impact on domestic violence survivors’ lives—are the result of our powerful grassroots advocacy model that engages advocates throughout California in identifying needs from their communities and helping to set our statewide policy priorities. The Partnership provides essential opportunities for local advocates to communicate the impact of our policy proposals to their elected legislators sharing real examples from their communities. Because of the Partnership, domestic violence advocates have a voice at our State and National Capitols.

Our unique policy work requires a financial investment by the Partnership in staff time and resources. As a nonprofit organization, the Partnership pays close attention to regulations and carefully tracks our time advocating for public policies (in accordance with appropriate tax and reporting laws). Last year, our legislative advocacy expenses amounted to $14,217 – of that, the Partnership spent approximately $3,077 advocating for AB 418. You can help us raise that amount so we are ready to advocate for critical public policies during the next legislative session.

Contribute today to help us reach our goal! Your gift could help make us eligible for matching contributions from the Allstate Foundation.

And, contributions to the Partnership of $50 or more will receive our signature Purple Purse Charm. Each charm is attached to a card featuring an inspiring survivor story. Attach your charm to any bag to show your continued support!

Inspired by our public policy work and want to help our fundraising effort? You too can join the Partnership’s Purple Purse Campaign! Sign on by clicking the purple “Fundraise for this Community Partner” button on the right and we will give you simple tools so that you can promote our campaign with your friends, family and contacts.

With your support we can continue our momentum and advance important public policies that strengthen domestic violence prevention and responses throughout California. When you make a donation to the Partnership, you become an ally in our statewide movement to end domestic violence.
