Calli's Semester at Sea & Exploring Negative Body Image
Organized by: Calli Zarpas
EVENT DATE Sep 08, 2016
Hi Everyone! I hope you are all doing well. I have been lucky enough to be able to take a "Semester at Sea" in the Fall. It is a 4 month long journey on a ship with 575 other college students from all over the world. I will be able to take classes in my major that will transfer back to my Pre-Education English major at Virginia Tech. We will be traveling from Germany to Greece, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Senegal, Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica and finish in California.
I applied for a lot of scholarships and was very happy to receive a full-tuition scholarship that will cover everything on my trip besides common travel fees like a passport, visa, and vaccinations, my textbooks, my flight and all the room and board off-ship. We stay in each country between 2 and 6 days. I've created this fundraiser because I need a little help with the extra expenses.
Brazilian Visa - $160
Passport - $180
Textbooks - $479
Required Vaccinations - $374 (Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Hepatitis A, Malaria)
Flight - $260
Food and Rooming off-board - $1500
If I am lucky enough to receive your donations you will not only be helping me receive a comparative education like no other that will go towards my degree, but you will help me achieve my goal of observing body image throughout the world.
The scholarship I applied for is called the Presidential Scholarship. The applicants have to make an action plan for something they are passionate about that this trip around the world will help them achieve. For my plan, I'm going to collect advertisements and magazines in each country to observe the differences between the "perfect" body in each country. I hope to create something striking and artistic to present at the end of my journey to show the body standards in each place I visit and how they differ from one another. I'm also going to hold a discussion group called "Positively Me" where the members talk about body image in each country and how it relates to their own. I'm hoping to discuss the influence of things like the fashion industry in Italy and poverty in poorer environments and the intersections of race, gender, class, etc. in body image. I will work with Connie Sobczak, co-founder of a non-profit that promotes healthy body image called The Body Positive, to create pre- and post-questionnaires to see how the journey and the discussion group changed their own body image or their idea of body image. I will also write a few blog entries for the National Eating Disorder Association on their youth blog "Proud 2 B Me." I hope to broaden the image of the perfect body for those who struggle to feel beautiful and learn more about how to change society to admire diversity.
I am really excited for this project, but I hope to have a little help (even if it's just $5 or a message of good luck) to be able to achieve everything I want to. I'm working this summer so I'll be putting everything I can towards this project as well. I hope you enjoyed learning a little bit about my project and have a great summer. Thanks so much for your consideration! Calli
