Calvin To D.C.
Organized by: Paul Cockrell
EVENT DATE Jun 09, 2014
It isn’t often that great opportunities come along, so when they do, you have to grab them and go. My son, Calvin, has an opportunity this summer to intern in a unique position that has been specifically created for him. Calvin is a freshman at The University of Alabama and is currently working on a major in Journalism, with leanings toward an emphasis in Politics and Business. After about a year of discussions, U.S. Representative Mike Rogers’ Press Secretary has agreed to let Calvin intern with her personally from mid-June to mid-July in the Washington, D.C. office. As you can imagine, this opportunity is exciting and a privilege that isn’t afforded to many people. In fact, Calvin will be the first ever intern for the Press Secretary, as most interns work toward the legislative side.
I am personally asking you if you could find it within your budget to help us offset some of the expenses of this month-long adventure. It’s serious work. It’s a serious opportunity. And it’s a seriously expensive proposition.
Housing costs alone will be upwards of $4,000 for the 30-day or so period. As a parent, grandparent, aunt, or uncle, you know that children have many options of things to do this summer. As Calvin’s dad, when this opportunity presented itself, I determined that I would do everything possible to make this happen for my son. Financially, times are difficult for all of us. But as a friend and community member, I am asking you to help join in with this effort if at all possible, so that we can all take joy in helping a responsible, dedicated member of the Munford community to experience something that very few will be able to.
One last big of bragging. If you didn’t know, Calvin has given quite a bit to our community with his work behind the scenes over the years in writing and taking photos for The Munford Weekly, for his being Valedictorian of his class at MHS in 2013, and the national recognition brought to our town by his being a National Merit Scholar and garnering a full tuition scholarship to the University of Alabama, where he has been on the President’s List two semesters in a row. Please help me show him our appreciation by considering a donation toward his 30 days in D.C.
