I am sure it is hard for many people to imagine that there is a hunger problem in the United States, the land of obesity. However, according to the USDA (2013), approximately 16 million children in America live in households without consistent access to adequate food (1 in 5 kids). Relative to Census data, that is about 22% of kids under the age of 18 who live in poverty in America. Children suffering from hunger in their developmental years is not only a short-term humanitarian issue, but a long-term social and economic one.

"Hungry children ages 0-3 years cannot learn as much, as fast, or as well because chronic undernutrition harms their cognitive development during this critical period of rapid brain growth, actually changing the fundamental neurological architecture of the brain and central nervous system."(

This decreased ability at this prime developmental age sets these children significantly behind their well-nourished counterparts, in terms of future financial and human capital accumulation. Not to mention that child hunger leads to greater health care costs for families and employers, and also has an inter-generational dimension, which could potentially create an ever increasing deficit in that family line.

According to research done by Feeding America, workers who experience hunger as children are not as well prepared physically, mentally, emotionally or socially to perform effectively in the contemporary workforce. In addition, this subset of workers leads to the creation of a workforce pool that is less competitive, with lower levels of educational and technical skills, and seriously constrained human capital.

Raise standards with me, and increase our nations average.

I will be running a 10k to back my donation through the Women’s Health Run10Feed10 in San Francisco, CA on October 26, 2014. My choice to run already provides 10 meals for those in need.

Please consider helping me add to that by donating any amount of money, big or small, to my fundraiser. All proceeds will go directly to The Feed Foundation (, and distributed to my local selection of the Oakland, CA area.

Hunger is the world’s most solvable problem.

It's something we can do something about. Together, we can make a huge impact in a very simple way. All you have to do is RUN!

This fall, Women’s Health will once again host our run with a mission. Run a 10K with us, and you will instantly provide 10 meals for those going hungry in your local and surrounding communities. You can join us by racing in New York City, Chicago or San Francisco, or you can join us at Fun Runs nationwide. If you don't live in one of our host cities - you can still participate! Sign up to run your own 10K. The money from your registration and fundraising efforts will go to those metropolitan areas nearest to you.

Visit RUN10FEED10.COM to register to run.

*Exact cost per meal varies by city. This represents the estimated number of meals your participation provides based upon the average cost per meal through a national network of food banks.
