This year's annual Penguin Random House Global Walk on Friday, June 17, 2016, will support CAMBA. Penguin Random House employees will walk — in teams and individually — along the Hudson River Walk. Everyone who participates in the Penguin Random House Global Walk can fundraise until the morning of the walk and compete for fun prizes.
Every step we take on the walk will help a struggling New Yorker turn the page to a better life.
As one of New York City’s largest multi-service agencies, CAMBA provides integrated services and programs in: Education and Youth Development, Family Support, Health, Housing, Legal Services, and Economic Development through more than 160 programs. We take a holistic approach to helping individuals, families and communities thrive.
Like Penguin Random House, CAMBA is committed to fostering a passion for reading for the 45,000 New Yorkers in need we serve every year, including 10,000 youth. For our clients, the enjoyment and discovery of books is only part of our goal. Developing literacy skills is an essential key to self-sufficiency and economic security – and we strive to give all of the people we work with the capability of reading and writing well so they can flourish.
Our youth literacy programs take place in family shelters and in permanent housing for the formerly homeless, in afterschool programs at schools and as part of afterschool, weekend and summer programming in 12 community centers.
Our Adult Literacy Center teaches English reading and writing skills to more than 1,000 immigrants each year – many of whom can neither read nor write in their native languages. Together, Penguin Random House and CAMBA can help break down barriers and open doors for young people and adults, transforming their lives and those in their family.
