I am a broadcasting teacher in an extremely impoverished community in West Virginia who is trying to raise funds to provide my students with basic equipment to use in our broadcasting program. I returned home to WV to transfer the skills I learned while working as a communications professional in Washington, DC, but find myself struggling to share that knowledge with my students in a meaningful manner because of the lack of essential equipment. Funding for non-STEM programs such as broadcasting is nearly impossible to come by in today's austere economy, despite the wealth of knowledge and transferable career and life skills that they provide to young people. Sometimes just providing a camcorder to a student to either shoot video or be recorded with goes a long way in giving them confidence to open up and develop interpersonal and communications skills that will lead them to successful career paths and livelihoods. My students produce a daily television show that serves as an information source and an avenue to recognize accomplishments of members of our school community. However, there job becomes frustrating because the scant amount of equipment that we have must be shared among students and handed off to several classes. As a result, students do not have access to equipment when they need it and the equipment gets more easily damaged since so many students are using it so frequently. I am trying desperately to find funding to purchase camcorders for our students to use for their work and would appreciate any help that someone out there may be able to offer. My students are talented and amazing young people who happen to live in an area with a very low tax base, and as a result, little funding comes their way. If you would like to help an aspiring film maker or reporter, or help students develop some of the skills they need to succeed, or just want to help them have a worthwhile experience in their television broadcasting class, please help fund our drive to purchase camcorders. I would be happy to provide more information about our program or our school. Thanks for reading our request!
