The Camfed ING NYC Marathon team is running to accomplish something life changing: sending 1,000 girls to high school in rural Africa. Without help, these girls will be forced to drop out of school due to poverty.
But with an education, a girl will be 3 times less likely to get HIV/AIDS, earn 25% more future income and have a healthier, better educated family.
Working in some of the most rural communities in Africa, Camfed provides girls in need with full high school scholarships throughout their education. These scholarships provide everything from school supplies and textbooks to uniforms and mentoring. Alumni of the program are now teachers, doctors, lawyers and businesswomen.
Will you help our team reach its goal? It costs just $25/month to send a girl to high school for a year, changing her life.
I am running my first marathon in support of Camfed on Sunday November 6th! I first learned about Camfed and was deeply inspired by their mission a couple of years ago after reading Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn's phenomenal book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide as well as through attending a film screening of the Camfed documentary The Entrepreneurs.
I am extremely lucky to have received the opportunities that I have had and to have been raised by parents who truly value the importance of education for their daughters. My mom was barred from attending college in China during the 1970s Cultural Revolution. She studied on her own for years until the schools re-opened and then earned her mechanical engineering degree in a class full of boys much younger than her. She knew the importance of education for women and girls and waited for her opportunity to come. Unfortunately, for many of the communities that Camfed serves, education for girls is not a given and there are few opportunities.
I firmly believe that girls' education is a major driving force for healthier families, healthier economies and healthier societies. Please support me and donate to the cause! Remember, even a gift of $40 can provide a school uniform that can help keep a girl in high school and $300 will provide 1 year of high school education. According to independent charity rating system Charity Navigator, 94.5% of donations to Camfed go directly to program expenses (not fundraising or administrative expenses).
Thanks for all your support!
