The Camfed ING NYC Marathon team is running to accomplish something life changing: sending 1,000 girls to high school in rural Africa. Without help, these girls will be forced to drop out of school due to poverty.
But with an education, a girl will be 3 times less likely to get HIV/AIDS, earn 25% more future income and have a healthier, better educated family.
Working in some of the most rural communities in Africa, Camfed provides girls in need with full high school scholarships throughout their education. These scholarships provide everything from school supplies and textbooks to uniforms and mentoring. Alumni of the program are now teachers, doctors, lawyers and businesswomen.
Will you help our team reach its goal? It costs just $25/month to send a girl to high school for a year, changing her life.

So I was introduced to the organization Camfed USA (Campaign for Female Education) after reading a wonderfully life-changing book called Half the Sky. The authors, Nicholas Kristoff and Sheryl WuDunn, offer a profound but simple solution to fight poverty world-wide: educate and empower women. Believe it or not, free education is not universal. In Vietnam, my grandparents could only afford to send my mother to middle school while her brothers went on to high school. It was expected of her to stay home with the rest of her sisters to help my grandmother with cooking and cleaning. She never once complained about this iniquity, just accepted it as the natural consequence of her status as a daughter and not a son. But she loved school. Her favorite subject was history and every day she enjoyed sharpening her classmates' pencils with a makeshift pencil sharpener (I think she said it was just a knife). Today, there are still millions of girls all over the world who want more than anything to go to school just like my mother did. On November 6, I'll be running the 2011 NYC Marathon on behalf of Camfed. I am also turning a quarter-of-a-century old. It would be really amazing to cross that finish line knowing that, with your help, we provided a full-year scholarship for ten girls in Africa and, in turn, afforded them a future to do amazing things of their own. I encourage you to visit www.camfed.org as well as www.halftheskymovement.org to see for yourself the changes that are already happening and are yet to come.
