BENEFITING: UNITY 4 ORPHANS
Hi Friends and Fam!
A few months ago I was fortunate enough to go on an eye opening experience and help with La Tribu de Jesus, one of the poorest orphanages in Baja. My heart melted, as I was getting to know all of the wonderful children and there beautiful faces, while receiving unlimited hugs.
Despite the fun we shared that afternoon, I was in shock to find out how awful the situation at the orphanage really was; that so many young kids are living in such need of the basic things we sometimes take for granted. La Tribu De Jesus Orphanage takes care of 75+ children, from the age of newborns to teenagers. Hearing that the kids had to share a bunk- 2 persons in one bed, and seeing that the rusty faucet had intermittent running water, and a limited supply of food and basic necessities was, humbling.
Added to this bitter reality, I discovered that only about 50 percent of the kids at the orphanage go to school, and that 65 percent are struggling below grade level. Worse, many of the children can not even read or write.
Even though the living conditions at La Tribu de Jesus Orphanage are so tough, the kids remained hopeful, with smiles on their faces and in high spirits of what will come, tomorrow. This is why for my birthday, as also is my passion, I want to help improve the care there, while do something to offer these beautiful children a brighter future. I want to help provide them with basic necessities and education. A strong young lady named Malala Yousafzai once said, “One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world.” I truly believe in the power of love and the power of education, and in the case of these kids, this might just be their way out: through our support.
To help these lovely and amazing children, I plan to raise money in joined commitment with an amazing organization that I enjoy volunteering with, called Unity 4 Orphans. With your help, we can help in providing the kids with:
1) On-Site Tutoring (through a local university program), for the children who do not attend school. This will focus on bringing the kids up to grade level, in an effort for them to re-enter the school system. For those who are too old to re-enter school, we will at least help ensure that they can read and write. (This only costs a little more than $200 per month, and I would like to raise enough of money to launch this new program at the orphanage.
2.) School Uniforms for the children who are in school, and for the kids who re-enter school, upon completing their tutoring program. With so many kids to care for, the orphanage is unable to afford this for all of the children- leaving the kids to feel out of place and sometimes unmotivated to attend, as they are teased for not having the proper clothes.
3) Food and Basic Necessities- the orphanage has limited supply of food and water, plus basic toiletries and hygiene items such as toilet paper, toothbrushes, soap and shampoo.
Please, with your help we can show our love to these wonderful kids by providing them with the support that will help them achieve their dreams to become whatever they want to be...and simply, by providing them with the proper education they rightfully deserve.
In honor of my birthday, please join me in making a generous donation that will change the life of a child.
P.S. - If you can not give right now, but want to donate toiletries or non-perishable food, please contact me. Also, if you would like to travel to the orphanage to meet the kids, please let me know, and I will put you in touch with my friends at Unity 4 Orphans. They coordinate service trips 2-3 times per month, and everyone is welcome! Please check out the video for a glimpse into what one of their outreach programs is like.
