BENEFITING: FRIENDS WITHOUT A BORDER
~In memory of Jamie McLaughlin
~Okay so in August I will be hiking the Camino De Santiago (The way of St James).
Originally I never planned on making this into a fundraiser due to the spiritual reasons of doing the hike, but after spending the last couple of months out in Loas and Cambodia and seeing a lot of their struggles with basic needs i felt the need to help. I donated to various charities and helped out where i could. But the most moving place i went to was Ankor Children's hospital in Ankor Wat where i donated blood, the work that Friends without a border did to build this hospital was so inspirational, Basic health care for children was virtually non-existent in Cambodia, especially after the Pol Pot regime where he killed a lot of intellectuals including nurses, doctors and teachers.
After Jamie was taken to hospital, 23 litres of blood were given to him without a second thought, after a visit to a centre in Loas called COPE (which is also a great charity) I learnt the story of an 8 year old boy who was unable to access blood in 3 different hospitals after he stepped on a bomb, this boy was then sent home to die!!
This should not of happened and with your help we can help other children stay alive!!!
Now Friends without a border is in the process of building another children’s hospital in Loas, which is due to open in 2015. Loas is the most bombed country in the world after America pulled back from Vietnam they continued to drop cluster bombs all over Loas. It is estimated that 260 million cluster bombs were dropped on Loas between 1964 and 1973 and that there are now 80 million UXOs (Unexploded ordnance) laying around the country. Since 1974 20,000 people have been seriously injured or killed as a result, 50% were children.
Friends without a border mission statement
We believe every child has the right to a healthy and loving life. Friends without a border will accomplish this by providing high-quality and compassionate medical care to the children of Southeast Asia, by creating community health education programmes and by training local health care professions.
Please help be a part of this.
Oh and for every day I go over my 32 day target I will donate $20.
