Back to School for 2 Kids in Need
Organized by: Tyler Turk
Six years ago, my family met Ms. Ruby Smith, the now eighty-two year old grandmother of two, living in the impoverished lower ninth ward of New Orleans, LA. Several years ago, she took in two of her six grand kids (the other four being brought up by other family members) in an effort to remove them from their drug-addicted mother and abusive father. She has very little money, her home was ravaged years ago by Hurricane Katrina, and she is single-handedly trying to raise two young children. Some of you may be familiar with this story, as we have been trying to help Ms. Ruby for several years now, with everything from rent to furniture to clothes, and many people have generously offered to contribute. Ms. Ruby receives just $15,000 a year to raise her two granddaughters; this must cover rent, clothes, food, and any other expenses (those are just the necessities, of course). As you can see, there's no room in the budget for many important purchases, including school supplies, school uniforms/clothing, and more, let alone any spare money for a leisure activity every once in a while. In an effort to help start off the school year right (and keep it that way) for this disadanvantaged family, we are raising money to help them out in any way possible. This money would be used for things most of us take for granted, but would mean the world to Ms. Ruby and her girls. Please consider helping this family in need; any size donation would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, The Turks and Smiths
P. S. If anyone has any questions about how our donations have worked and been spent in the past, or how yours could be spent in the future, please feel free to ask! We want you to know this money is going to good use helping a family in need that really got unlucky in several ways.
