BENEFITING: CAMP KESEM NATIONAL
ORGANIZER: CAMP KESEM NATIONAL
EVENT DATE: Jul 31, 2016
Hi family and friends,
Thank you so much for coming to my page!
I was introduced to Kesem last summer and have never been so touched by an organization and all of the inspiring people behind it.
I went to a charity event called “Make the Magic” where I heard incredibly brave stories about loss and heartbreak and was shocked to see the voices on the other end of the microphone were young kids and teens sharing their journeys about losing their parents to cancer.
They also shared the part where they were able to find happiness again because there was a place where they could escape and just be kids. Where they could have the camaraderie of their peers who had similar stories and experiences.
This place was Camp Kesem. Kesem means, “magic” in Hebrew and that’s what these camps are – magic. Kesem holds more than 70 free camps at college campuses across the country, run by college student volunteers who are trained to support, inspire, nurture and entertain kids who've lost a parent to cancer, or who have a parent fighting cancer.
I initially felt a bit out of place signing up for this because I can’t personally relate to the 3 million+ kids who have been affected by a parent having cancer but I can relate to losing someone you love and thinking you’re alone. Being angry, scared, lost, feeling numb. Seeking solace while not trying to burden your friends. When condolences from said friends can only do so much because they haven’t experienced it.
Hearing these brave little humans share their stories of finding comfort at camp and not only surviving but continuing to survive every day with such grace and positivity really was inspirational. It made me want to help in any way possible.
So here I am, running the SF marathon and asking you to help me reach my goal of $1,000 and to raise money for such an incredible community that gives hope to those most deserving.
Thank you all for your generosity, support and taking the time to read this.
