EVENT: YMCA Camp Nissokone
As an 8-year-old girl I had no idea what was in store for me when my parents signed me up for my first session of summer camp. I was shy, nervous, and scared to go away from home for 2 weeks. We drove through the gates of Camp Nissokone, greeted by the towering pine trees overhead and the smiling camp counselors in the driveway. My parents helped me unpack and reluctantly drove off. Throughout the course of those 2 weeks something changed in me. That shy little girl was gone and a confident, adventurous, and outgoing girl was left. Not only did I get to try activities that I had never done before, like high ropes, sailing, and archery, I got to form bonds with the other girls in my cabin. Those 2 weeks pushed me outside my comfort zone and allowed me to grow in mind, body, and spirit. At the end of my first session, my parents arrived and I couldn't stop talking about the amazing things I experienced. I asked them to send me back next summer.
Fast forward 12 summers later and I'm still at camp. I've been in many roles during my time here, going from a Leader-in-Training and Counselor-in-Training, to being a Junior and Senior Counselor, to the Leader-in-Training Director, and now as the Teen Program Coordinator. Throughout these roles, one thing has never changed -my passion for watching kids have a transformative experience at Camp Nissokone. It's one that I have lived and it's one that I've seen happen for so many kids. 2 weeks is all it took to change my life forever and every child should have the chance to experience that.
I believe in the power of camp. Kids get the chance to be in nature, to do activities they've never done, to make connections with kids their own age, and to have responsible mentors to look up to. A week of camp encourages independence, confidence, leadership, communication skills, respect for the environment and others, and a chance to disconnect with the world and reconnect with personal identity. Please consider donating to help as many campers as possible!

We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Overnight Camp helps youth and teens unplug and discover the world around them. Campers gain independence, make new friends, challenge their limits, explore the natural world, and create lifelong habits of healthy living. At camp there are trees to climb, memories to be made and campfires under the stars, all under the supervision of caring, enthusiastic staff hailing from all over the world. Not all children have access to enriching summer experiences. The Y raises funds so everyone, regardless of income or background, has the ability to learn, grow and thrive at camp. We count on the generosity of people like you to help give kids this life-changing experience. Your gift will have a meaningful, enduring impact- lifelong friendships, new skills and new self-confidence learned at Camp Nissokone. We’re committed to youth development and know lasting change comes when we all work together to invest in our children. Give today for a better us.
