THE STORY:

THE STORY:

2018 marks the start of this new partnership and our "Sailing the Straits Adventure."  Campers will learn basic sailing on our traditional sailboats at camp, then use those skills on the Great Lakes. Captained by Nissokone alum Bob Pawlus ('63-76), the Retriever is a 52′ ketch offshore sailboat where teens learn the fundamentals of helmsmanship, navigation, and marine safety in a weeklong sailing trip on the Great Lakes. Bob began his lifelong love of boating at age 9 and learned to sail at Camp Nissokone. When he is not out on “Retriever” he captains a car ferry and has has logged over 100,000 miles under sail all over the world.

This program is the realization of a 30 year dream for Bob to expand the Nissokone sailing prgogram to the Great Lakes. “What better way than 6 days of total immersion in an offshore sailing adventure, on a vessel that has sailed halfway around the world." Based in its home port of Mackinaw City, Michigan, the Retriever will utilize harbors throughout the northern Great Lakes as classrooms to teach teens how to sail.

We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Overnight Camp helps youth and teens unplug and discover the world around them. Campers gain independence, make new friends, challenge their limits, explore the natural world, and create lifelong habits of healthy living. At camp there are trees to climb, memories to be made and campfires under the stars, all under the supervision of caring, enthusiastic staff hailing from all over the world. Not all children have access to enriching summer experiences. The Y raises funds so everyone, regardless of income or background, has the ability to learn, grow and thrive at camp. We count on the generosity of people like you to help give kids this life-changing experience. Your gift will have a meaningful, enduring impact- lifelong friendships, new skills and new self-confidence learned at Camp Nissokone. We’re committed to youth development and know lasting change comes when we all work together to invest in our children. Give today for a better us.

Bob is living the dream - still sailing after all these years. The Sailing the Straits Adventure is a great idea and I hope it brings many more new sailors to Camp Nissokone. Commodore Bob, thanks for teaching me the value of a one-handed bowline, back in 1971. You were right, it did come in handy one day. 2 months ago
