"Over the last three years, Camp Nissokone has seen significant growth in overnight camp attendance, growing over 115% since 2013. Enrollment in our teen leadership program has more than tripled. In order to sustain and accommodate this rapid growth, we need to increase the amount of space we have available to house campers and their counselors. We are encountering capacity issues in our six largest weeks each summer. In order to successfully meet the needs of our growing demand, we need to increase our capacity. Right now, Camp Nissokone needs your help. A grant to transform an underutilized pavilion on camp into a cabin has been selected for award from over 120 grant applications. This project will create space to sleep an additional 24 campers with a central fireplace / gathering area, private restrooms with showers. This would be the first step of creating a teen leadership village on our north end of camp and will add an additional 192 spaces to our summer overnight capacity throughout the season. The current structure (known as the Canadian Shelter or the Phillip H. Gray Pavilion) is located at the site of the original homestead for the property when it was donated to the YMCA. The current pavilion has a roof, with open sides, surrounding a central fireplace. The structure has electricity, but does not have access to running water or sewage. The renovation plans are complete and include enclosing the pavilion, building private restrooms and shower facilities, and adding a small deck behind the pavilion overlooking Lake VanEtten for conversation and meeting space. Designed with ADA accessibility in mind, this cabin would double our sleep space for campers with mobility limitations, as it would become one of two cabin spaces on camp without a staircase entry. In each of the past two summers at Nissokone, we’ve been able to achieve significant facility upgrades with the help of Nissokone Alumni who care about camp. In 2015, together we built a 100 person porch on the Dining Hall. In 2016, together we renovated the basement of the Theatre into a multipurpose conference / teen leadership space. This year, we need your help to reach our goal. We’ve raised $20,000 through a matching grant from the YMCA of the USA strategic initiatives fund. We need to raise the remaining $20,000 by Oct 1 in order to complete the project by Dec 31, as required by the grant. Again, Nissokone HAS BEEN selected to receive this grant to complete this renovation... under two conditions: 1) we need to match the funding of $20,000 and 2) the renovation must be completed this calendar year. Will you consider contributing to make this transformation possible? Your gift will be doubled by the matched grant funding we’ve been awarded, but without your help, this opportunity goes to waste. We need to finish fundraising to start on renovation by October 1 in order to finish the project by the end of the year, so we have less than 8 weeks to reach our funding goal. Help us make the magic of camp possible for thousands of children and future generations by giving today."
