THE STORY:

Camp Ānuenue (generously sponsored by Small Army For A Cause Inc.) is a weeklong camping experience offered to children in Hawaii, ages 7-18, who have or have had cancer. Cancer can be isolating, especially when a diagnosis leaves very little room for childhood. At Camp Ānuenue (ah-nuh-eh-nuh-eh), we understand that the cancer journey does not stop at remission. Survival is the first vital obstacle a child or young adult must overcome, but will unfortunately, not be the last. We appreciate the support and generosity of all who made this year's June program a reality for our campers! We had an amazing week filled with super fun activities and quality time to build/strengthen friendships! With 12 new campers (a new record!) we are more motivated than ever to secure funding for 2018, and that begins right here in our NEW Camp Ānuenue 2018 Campaign! Camp Ānuenue's mission has always been to provide a community of support and understanding for young survivors through a weeklong camping experience. Although cancer is what brings our campers to us, the program is designed to leave the hospital behind and focus on what really matters: allowing these kids to be kids. With daily activities like swimming in the ocean or pool to flying down the zipline, and special events like a drive-in movie theatre and "camp prom", illness takes a backseat to fun. The program was established by The American Cancer Society (ACS) in 1985 and has been a "home away from home" for roughly 40-60 children each summer. In 2014 ACS announced it's decision to direct all of it's resources to cancer research. Sadly, this resulted in the defunding of cancer programs across the country, including Camp Ānuenue. Through the determination of committed individuals, including the staff comprised of 100% volunteers, the camp has continued and is now established as it's own non-profit. Camp has, and always will, rely solely on the donations and support of generous individuals, businesses and communities. The weeklong program is provided free of charge to campers and their families, who carry the financial and emotional burdens of life-threatening illnesses on a daily basis. Because the program is open to all childhood cancer survivors in Hawaii, the camp also flies in children from neighboring islands and U.S. territories. We have campers who are in active treatment as well as long time survivors, all of whom receive medical attention from our full time volunteer medical staff of doctors and nurses. Camp Ānuenue costs close to $75,000 to run annually, including lodging, meals, activities and supplies. With the lack of direct support from a large organization like ACS, the 32 year old program must raise funds each year to operate.
