Youth/Family Autism Camp

"Campers for a week; Friends for a lifetime"

Camp AweSum has two types of camps, one for youths only and one for families who have a child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Both camps are held at the same site, Moon Beach Camp, which is located at beautiful Moon Lake, in the majestic Northwoods near St. Germain, Wisconsin.

Camp facilities at Moon Beach include modern, clean cabins in a pristine Northwoods environment. Meals are enjoyed in a family –like atmosphere at the spacious Moon Beach dining hall. Camp AweSum is a typical camp experience with all the trimmings; arts & crafts, canoeing/kayaking/sailing, hiking, swimming, fishing, campfires, bog walks, and the less typical events like Karaoke, Variety Show and Dance night.

Family camp is an opportunity to vacation with other families who “understand your story.” The age and functioning level of the person on the Autism Spectrum is irrelevant for this camp. This is an extraordinary opportunity for families to relax and rejuvenate in an idyllic Northwoods setting while enjoying the understanding and support provided by other families and by an organization and staff that embrace differences. You’ll have opportunities to share tales and laugh about things only families such as yours could know and appreciate!

Respite is provided to parents daily between breakfast and lunch. This is an opportunity for the parents/caregivers to do whatever you like while your child(ren) are supported in activities designed to engage and entertain them by a staff devoted to children on the Autism Spectrum. Some families come equipped with their bicycles and take advantage of the miles of bike paths in the area. Others go kayaking, fishing, hiking, while still others have participated in yoga sessions. Three hours to rejuvenate daily is a most welcome aspect of family camp.

Camp AweSum Youth camp is a 6-day (5 overnights) residential summer camp for children with a diagnosis on the Autism Spectrum who are characterized as being fairly independent (typically those diagnosed with Aspergers or higher functioning Autism). Appropriate candidates for youth camp are those who will do well with a 4 to 1 ratio of campers to counselor. Youth camp welcomes nine to fifteen year old youths (as of June 1, 2016) for a fun-filled week of camp. In addition to the typical camp offerings already stated, youth campers will enjoy basket weaving, drumming, nature walks with a naturalist, a night hike, and a host of kid-friendly sensory-based activities.

Our vision is to provide an experience that enables campers to feel pride in learning new skills while being away from home. Campers will be with children their age, who share similar interests, skills, and wonderful gifts. Campers will learn new skills, gain confidence in being away from home, develop lifelong friendships, experience a summer camp without stress and anxiety, and be supported in all they attempt to do. Self esteem will soar, and friendships will burgeon at Camp AweSum!

The staff of Camp AweSum works to support the campers to enjoy camp to the best of their ability. Staff includes an RN 24 hours a day as well as occupational therapists, a physical therapist, and a music therapist. Among the counselors are licensed teachers and paraprofessionals with experience in Autism, graduate and undergraduate students, and parents of children on the autism spectrum. Additionally, all staff will pass a background and reference check and will receive training designed specifically for Camp AweSum.

Camp AweSum is the result of dedicated hours of planning on behalf of a committed Board. Dr. Glenis Benson, an autism consultant, joined the Board at its inception. Other Board members include businessmen/women, parents of children with autism, special education teachers, an occupational therapist, and a registered nurse.

Camp AweSum, a not-for-profit charitable organization, began as a youth-only camp in 2005. Additionally, in 2009 Moon Beach Camp began offering the family camp opportunity. In 2011, Camp AweSum assumed the organization of family camp in addition to the existing youth camp.
