Remember playing on a bridge over a creek in Mission Canyon (or wherever your bridge was) when you were about 2 feet tall? Well, that bridge burned! Seriously, it was two years ago when the Campbell Bridge burned in the Jesusita Fire and we are going to rebuild it.
This isn’t just any bridge, it is a bridge that connects one side of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden to the other; it links our present to our past; and it allows our community to experience the essence and heart of the Garden. The history part is pretty important, a lot of people thought so and the County of Santa Barbara designated it a historic landmark. You see, back in 1941, Ina Therese Campbell made a donation to build the bridge in the first place because she wanted everyone to explore the Garden, even those who could not make the creek crossing over boulders. Over the years, hundreds of thousands of visitors crossed the bridge to experience some of California’s many habitats including a riparian canyon, a redwood forest, a desert and a colorful meadow.
When flames swept through the canyon, everything burned. The plants are growing back and we’ve got the architectural plans for the bridge. Now we need to rebuild it, and we need your help. We are asking as many people as we know to make a gift of any size so we can have this bridge in place by December 31, 2012.
If you don't want to donate online, you can always send a check to
