A MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER:

School-end and Summer is perhaps the most exciting time of year for HerShe. It sparks a beginning. The beginning of a new program year. In fact, it's our 7th! We're in the midst of recruiting a new 'class' of foster care girls. We get especially excited about the event that sparks every new program year. Camp Cinderella.

Inarguably the most critical component of the overall program, Camp Cinderella is a sort of residence rehabilitation. A two-week 're-boot' camp sparking the entry point for new recruits. So camp serves as the 'immersion' into our overall 3-prong program curriculum which also includes Mentorship and Positive Youth Development including Youth-to-Adult Transition Training.

Camp Cinderella is essential to sparking each girls' success. Removing them from their environment for an extended period gives them the space to step away from their dire, damaging situations to gain a fresh look at possibilities. We identify, assess and address issues, head-on and hands-on, especially during camp. It's so life altering, the change is perceptible to friends, foster family and social workers.

Camp Cinderella is a safe sanctuary the girls haven't known. Where they explore and discuss personal challenges, heal from past abuses, and confront identity issues. Of course, there's some fun, too. Fun, first experiences and conversation all spark much needed bonding these girls have never known, knew long ago, and/or only briefly.

We hope to spark a much needed contribution to be used for Camp Cinderella from you, right now.

Thank you and Happy Summer!

Cinderella, a Fairy & a Magic Wand

Why the reference to the Cinderella fairy tale? We believe Cinderella is also the story of a foster girl. More than a tale of girl who loses her shoe and finds her prince, the story is also about a girl who is abused, neglected and treated like an outsider, but dares to follow her dreams. Cinderella feared the loss of her dress and carriage at midnight. The clock, too, strikes midnight for a foster girl as she turns 18, typically the age of emancipation. So help us wave the magic wand on our HerShe girls by contributing today!

Camp Curriculum

Designed to provide a foundation of life and leadership skills. Individual and group discussions address acute challenges HerShe girls face within their families and the foster care system itself. Eight certified Life Coaches developed and now guide the curriculum hands-on with remarkable insight and knowledge. The strength of curriculum, originally developed for Yale University, is matched by their education and life experiences. This team is known as Catalyst Youth Leadership Project.

Uniquely HerShe

Foster girls are characteristically more wounded, deprived, and heavily laden with emotional scars affecting their bodies, behavior and worldview. Their experiences often leave them suffering from severe anxiety, depression, and especially, low self-esteem. HerShe knows before any 'how to' skills are relevant, girls must first learn to accept themselves, love themselves, forgive, and believe in a future that looks markedly different from the past. But it takes time to build confidence, character, competence and the desire to make a contribution. HerShe recognizes love and trust aren't built overnight, or in a 2-hour class, especially after years of neglect and abuse. It takes long-term relationships and commitment. HerShe aims to make an impact at the core of each girls' being, understanding this is the only way to make real, lasting change that breaks the cycle.
